According to the Roman architect Vitruvius, the Kariatides represented the women of the Laconian city of Karies, which had grazed during the Persian war and was punished with the murder of its men and the capture of its women. It is more likely, however, that the Daughters were identified with the Kariatides virgins, who performed the well-known dances in their homeland in honor of the KARIATIDA Artemis. The six daughters have one leg bent, the one towards the central axis (or more simply the three left the right leg and the three right the left leg).
