Our light ornament adapts the lively tulip motif on a Favrile glass lampshade (1907–12) by Louis C. Tiffany Studios (American, 1902–32). The tulip was a popular theme for the designer, who drew deep inspiration from nature. Wisteria sinensis, known as Chinese wisteria, is a species of flowering plant native to China. Also known as wisteria or wisteria it is a hardy climbing plant with beautiful hanging flowers in the form of a bunch that create a unique aesthetic effect in purple.   Our luminous ornament borrows the cascade of wisteria that frames the idyllic view of Oyster Bay (circa 1908). Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) designed this stained glass window to decorate the Manhattan residence of silk manufacturer William C. Skinner, whose family home in Massachusetts was called Wistariahurst. We have transferred the hibiscus flowers and parrots adorning a light window (circa 1910–20) in The Met collection to a beautiful cloisonné ornament for the house. This Favrile stained glass window designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) showcases the designer's mastery of color, texture and light to render pictorial drama and depth. The secular theme and small size of the window suggest that it was intended for a domestic space.
