This is an image of Nova totius Terrarum Orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabula, a map of the world created by Hendrik Hondius in 1630, and published the following year in the atlas Atlantis Maioris Appendix. Among its claims to notability is the fact that it was the first dated map published in an atlas, and therefore the first widely available map, to show any part of Australia, the only previous map to do so being Hessel Gerritsz' 1627 Caert van't Landt van d'Eendracht ("Chart of the Land of Eendracht"), which was not widely distributed. The Australian coastline shown is part of the west coast of Cape York Peninsula, discovered by Jan Carstensz in 1623. Curiously, the map does not show the west coast features shown in Gerritsz' Caert.

Ortelius's map Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (1570) The Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (or "Theatre of the World") is considered to be the first true modern atlas. Prepared by Abraham Ortelius and originally printed on May 20, 1570 in Antwerp, it consisted of a collection of uniform map sheets and sustaining texts bound to form a book for which copper printing plates were specifically engraved. The Ortelius atlas is sometimes referred to as the summary of sixteenth-century cartography. Many of his atlas's maps were based upon sources that no longer exist or are extremely rare. Ortelius appended a unique source list (the "Catalogus Auctorum") identifying the names of contemporary cartographers, some of whom would otherwise have remained obscure. Three Latin editions of this (besides a...

Antique world map titled 'Mappemonde ou Description du Globe Terrestre'. The Robert de Vaugondy family of mapmakers was preeminent in the eighteenth century, at a time when the French were at the forefront of cartography. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy was a descendent of the family of the great 17th century French cartographer Nicolas Sanson. Sanson had initiated the so-called “French school of cartography,” which was unprecedented in its attention to precision and scientific detail, and which discarded much of the decorative embellishments of previous maps as being irrelevant. From Sanson’s time in the second half of the seventeenth century until the latter part of the eighteenth century, with the activity of the Robert de Vaugondy family, French geographical conceptions...

According to the Roman architect Vitruvius, the Kariatides represented the women of the Laconian city of Karies, which had grazed during the Persian war and was punished with the murder of its men and the capture of its women. It is more likely, however, that the Daughters were identified with the Kariatides virgins, who performed the well-known dances in their homeland in honor of the KARIATIDA Artemis. The six daughters have one leg bent, the one towards the central axis (or more simply the three left the right leg and the three right the left leg). They wear a Doric veil that forms folds between the breasts and as it flows down to the feet. Their hair is long, combed back and tied loosely. Arms are missing from all. According to Roman copies in Tivoli one hand held the...

Adoration of the Magi , Domenico Ghirlandaio (Florence 1449 - 1494) ,  1487  Museum  The Uffizi Technique  Tempera on panel Size  171.5 cm (diameter) The homage of the Magi to the newly born Saviour is set against a backdrop dominated by the ruins of an ancient building, with the stable where Jesus was born in the middle. It is a recurring setting in paintings of the Nativity and the Adoration of the Christ Child, and one that alludes to the birth of Christianity and the collapse of pagan religion. The decorative friezes on the portico are inspired by ancient Roman art, which Domenico Ghirlandaio was able to admire on his travels to Rome where, among other things, he worked on the decorations of the Sistine Chapel in St Peter’s...

The blue-and-white glass ball ornament set pays homage to a classical color palette with reference to three cobalt-painted porcelain objects in The Met's collection: a plate of two elegant ladies in the Japanese fashion (c. 1735–40) attributed to Cornelis Pronk (Dutch, 1691–1759), who was commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to create a design for Chinese and, later, Japanese potters to use as a model. a mid-17th-century Chinese brush stand depicting a scene from a 16th-century mythological novel. and an early 18th-century Chinese plate decorated with an idyllic family scene, a popular subject during the Qing dynasty (1644–1911).   Set of 3 ornaments / balls   Hand Painted Glass - 8cm diameter   Includes white ribbon for...

Wisteria sinensis, known as Chinese wisteria, is a species of flowering plant native to China. Also known as wisteria or wisteria it is a hardy climbing plant with beautiful hanging flowers in the form of a bunch that create a unique aesthetic effect in purple.   Our luminous ornament borrows the cascade of wisteria that frames the idyllic view of Oyster Bay (circa 1908). Louis C. Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) designed this stained glass window to decorate the Manhattan residence of silk manufacturer William C. Skinner, whose family home in Massachusetts was called Wistariahurst. However, the picturesque window view suggested an Oyster Bay association for its similarity to the view of the North Shore of Long Island, where the Gilded Age visionary had recently built a...

We have transferred the hibiscus flowers and parrots adorning a light window (circa 1910–20) in The Met collection to a beautiful cloisonné ornament for the house. This Favrile stained glass window designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 1848–1933) showcases the designer's mastery of color, texture and light to render pictorial drama and depth. The secular theme and small size of the window suggest that it was intended for a domestic space. The whole world was anxious until Howard Carter finally announced the discovery of Tutankhamun's intact tomb on November 4, 1922. And the result was shocking: over 5,000 individual finds, magnificent grave goods made of pure gold, but above all the legendary funerary mask of the young pharaoh was the reward for his labors. The mask, made of pure gold, was placed on Tutankhamun's mummy, which was completely wrapped in linen bandages on the head and shoulders. Bring the aura of Egypt into your home with a high-quality, detailed replica of the mask.       Original: Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Tutankhamun's treasure.
